In this segment we get a rare view of emerging musical ultra-star, Damian "Chunks" Salerno, performing the fiendishly difficult Leyenda. Pay close attention to Damian's passionate relationship with the piece as his moods and volume rise and fall in a recording that is more true to music than any other in history. It is truly rare for anyone in any field to achieve complete mastery of their subject. As you will soon see, hear, and a dare say, feel, Salerno has accomplished this.
With a subtle attack and deep understanding, he begins the first measures, and gently darkens his tone to sweep the fortunate listener into the piece. During the second movement I can't help but feel that I am part of the music rather than merely listening and watching. The master's technique envelops all who are near. I was awestruck. Though Damian rarely speaks to reporters about his future performances, I have assurance from him that many more are forthcoming. Agents at NAXOS records have also indicated to me that Salerno intends to put out an album of spoken word, song, and "body sounds," as a way to demonstrate his overall musical excellence. Early sessions have been likened to "choirs of angels harmonizing and smacking their portly bellies in a most symphonious way.." This comment came from an engineer at NAXOS who asked not to be identified, and who is truly a fortunate human being for having been in the presence of such greatness. In an event as rare as Salerno is gifted, all music critics agree that if there is only one thing lacking from Damian's work, it is quantity. Salerno tickles and tempts us with his offerings. I for one can't stand the wait, but I must. At least for now I have Leyenda to carry away all my senses. I believe it will carry me until once again, Salerno stuns us all. -Alfonso deLucinda |
